Super Furry Animals were one of the first post-alternative bands to fuse a number of different musical genres – including power pop, punk rock, techno and progressive rock – to create dazzling, melodic, irreverent and consciously artistic rock & roll.
“Phantom Power” is produced by the band and remains much more inconspicuous than the band’s previous works. The album is mostly full of pedal steel, acoustic guitars and vocal harmonies. But if you think the creative powers have waned, you couldn’t be more wrong. Gruff Rhys’ songwriting takes a step forward on “Phantom Power,” with playful, story-based lyrics about turtles, mingers, ninjas and cabbages juxtaposed with lines about death, radiation and war. This 2LP Heavyweight Deluxe Reissue has been beautifully remastered from the Mixdown tapes and includes liner notes by album executive producer Kurt Stern. If you need more Super Furries, the remastered album is also available in 3CD format, with two additional CDs full of bonus material including outtakes, demos and live version.
