Huntress - Spell Eater (2012) /2012, Napalm Records/ [WavPack|Lossless]<Heavy Metal>

There’s been a lot of words about Huntress within the metal world during the last months. That is not only because of the sturdy metal these Americans produce, but also because of the vocal capabilities – and definitely the prominent appearance – of front woman Jill Janus. The band also drew attention of the record industry and scored a deal with Napalm. And so at the end of last month the band’s debut long player, ‘Spell Eater’, was a fact.

Huntress presents itself as a heavy metal band, but the Music we hear on ‘Spell Eater’ is clearly more than that. The music shows similarities with traditional heavy metal the way it was done in the eighties, but the band also leans towards thrash, speed and even black metal! Try to imagine a blend of bands like Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Cradle Of Filth, Hellion and Détente, and you might get an idea of what you can expect. Miss Janus also proves to be capable of many different styles and constantly switches between clean vocals, grunt and screams. The total picture therefore sounds rather versatile and the music does not let itself be labelled that easily.

But still I never really understood all the commotion concerning this band, and after hearing the record more often my thoughts are still unchanged! Okay, the music is utterly metal, the band delivers good riffs and the songs are performed with excellence. But not all pieces are equally catchy, nor convincing and especially in the slower parts the music threatens to lose your attention. On vocal matters there is no doubt that Jill is a talented, capable and – as already mentioned – a very diverse vocalist. Her voice is delightfully aggressive and at some point she reminds me a lot of the legendary Dawn Crosby (Détente). It’s just that her voice doesn’t apply to me that much. In fact, it is exactly because of her voice that I often don’t manage to sit out an entire song! The constant screaming becomes quite boring to me, and seeing that the vocals play a big role in Huntress and are dominantly present in the mix, it’s quite hard for me to listen to ‘Spell Eater’ from start to finish. But hey, that’s a matter of taste.

Altogether ‘Spell Eater’ is definitely a strong debut and thanks to the various influences and the versatile vocals, the band has created a sound of their own. The album also has enough to offer in order to apply to a broad audience. Definitely worth a listen.
