Поддерживаются очень многие форматы электронных книг, включая FB2, HTML, AZW, AZW1, CBR, CBZ, CHM, EPUB, IMP, LIT, LRF, LRX, MOBI, ODT, OEBZIP, OPF, PDB, PDF, PML, PMLZ, PRC, RAR, RB, RTF, SNB, TPZ, TXT и ZIP.
В дистрибутив входит приложение E-book viewer, позволяющее читать электронные книги некоторых форматов прямо в Calibre. Впрочем, возможностей у этой читалки не так уж много, и E-book viewer предназначен, скорее, не для чтения, а для просмотра результата конвертации.

Одной из наиболее сильных сторон Calibre является возможность конвертации электронных книг из одного формата в другой, что позволяет, например, без труда преобразовывать "стандартные" форматы PDF, RTF, ODT, HTML и т.п. в форматы, пригодные для чтения на e-ридерах.

Другие полезные особенности Calibre: возможность синхронизации с некоторыми устройствами для чтения электронных книг, многоязычный интерфейс.

Не требует инсталляции и может работать с любого съемного носителя.

Edit Book: Add support for third party plugins to extend the editors functionality.

calibredb list: Add a --for-machine option that causes the output to be made in a form more easily parsed programmatically (it uses ASCII field and record separators)

Edit Book: When re-arranging the toolbars inside an individual file editor, save the new toolbar layout so that it is re-used in the future. Also apply the changed layout to all open editors of the same type.
